Evaporative cooling due to chemical reactions?

Working away through Kays work and came across an equation that describes mass-creation rate due to chemical reactions.... this does happen in our scenario. But what if we induced this. Say instead of water we put in component a and b would require a specific temperature to react. they would use up the heat around in the reaction thus cooling the inner pot? The problem is to find a set of components a and b such that their by product is also useful at the least. Maybe a dead end this though.

  1. Is this the concept used by those cooling packs which induce an endothermic chemical reaction when activated ? (see: http://home.howstuffworks.com/refrigerator7.htm)
Please could you explain what you mean by "mass creation" in this context. Also please could help us understand the connection between evaporative cooling and the chemical reaction. Thank you
